Do your mother-in-law's opinions about home decor matter?

Remember last week I mentioned that I had scored two fabulous mismatched benches at the flea market? They're unique, sturdy and compliment our dining table nicely. However when my mother-in-law came over to see our new place, she remarked, "Oh. Your dining room set--isn't that something you see outdoors?" I think she had a picnic table in mind.

Oh, I think they matter inasmuch as you let them bother you, no? These guys at Country Living put an old picnic table in the kitchen:

(You'll have to scroll to the kitchen photos.)

Anyway, totally different vibe obviously from the photo you have here, but... I think it works. And yours is not even a picnic table. :)

oh MAN what a topic! my mother in law insists on putting condiments into decorative bowls i.e. mayonnaise and ketchup must be put into bowls and can't be served directly from the container. She loves french-country provincial and paisley and toile-i'm modern and crisp and clean. i love her dealer, but sometimes I feel like leaving the hummus in the container, ya know?

Everyone's got an opinion...just tell her all about the great feedback you got from your readers and friends and how they exclaimed that you 'have great style!'
(aka, shove it mom)

;)

It doesn't matter to me at all. Everyone has their own style, that is what makes life interesting!

Definitely don't consider the mother-in-law! Or anyone for that matter. If you love it, it's great!

i'd say no, however, anyone second guessing my design decisions makes me think twice. what you're describing sounds lovely though, so leave it!
